Student Life - Term Paper

I've been quite busy with school work lately. How about you?

It's that time again when I need to write my final paper and wrap up what I have learned. Ugh! Term papers! I know that it is a necessary evil but who ever looks forward to writing them?  I am currently holed up in the computer lab on campus.  I'm well stocked with caffiene and sugar. I have a cup of piping hot coffee next to my mouse and a backup bottle of Diet Coke sitting next to my monitor. (The sugar is in the coffee)

I have music blaring into my earphones from my icloud account while I'm working on my paper. (If you are guy sitting next to me furiously typing away, sorry for the loud music and incessant toe tapping)

Ok, enough playing around on my blog. Time to dig in and concentrate on my term paper again.
Bye for now!

Twitter - Where to Begin?

H E L P !!!!  Twitter is wonderful but so VAST!

I have to admit that I haven't come close to understanding Twitter and all that it is capable of.

Where does one even begin? Where can one find a listing of  all the different Twitter applications?

Please dear reader, can you point me in the right direction?

Technology encroaching on our privacy

I just read the article, School District Allegedly Snapped Thousands of Student Webcam Spy Pics.

It was really scary.  Here's the intro from the article.

A webcam spying scandal at a suburban Philadelphia school district is broadening, with lawyers claiming the district secretly snapped thousands of webcam images of students using school-issued laptops without the pupils’ knowledge or consent.
Some of the images included pictures of youths at home, in bed or even “partially dressed,” according to a Thursday filing in the case. Pupils’ online chats were also captured, as well as a record of the websites they visited.

I'm all for the benefits of Technology in the schools but, really, someone should have known better that to allow the laptop's webcams to be used to take pictures of students.  The school states that they only used the webcam to take pictures when the laptop was reported stolen.  There, however, seem to be many students and their families that say otherwise.

I have been a bit wary of webcams myself.  Several years ago I read that hackers can gain access to your home webcam. Therefore, when it was time for me to purchase a webcam, I bought one that comes with a built-in cover that you can raise and lower.  I only have the cover up when I am actively using the webcam.

It seems that my concerns haven't been that far off the mark judging by the above article.  Are you comfortable having your webcam's beady little eye directed at you all the time?

Apple - Evil?

There seems to be a lot of conspiracy theories out there. One such is this one.

Apple: An Evil Empire in the making?
Picture a tall man in a black flowing cape, wearing a black plastic helmet and carrying a futuristic weapon(a light saber) and you are picturing the CEO of Apple, Steve Jobbs. That is if you agree with the author, Tom Kaneshige. He believes that Apple may be purposely thumbing their nose at Adobe. As he wrote:

Three years ago, Apple launched the iconic iPhone whose mobile Safari did not support Adobe Flash. Nor does the present-day iPad. At first, Apple said it was because Flash was poorly written and drained precious battery life. Jobs even went so far as calling Adobe developers lazy.

The write-up seems to reinforce a bit of what I said in my last post about having to choose sides between the biggies of industry.

It seems there will always be those that will look for an underlying conspiracy.

Microsoft vs Apple - Do I Really have to Choose a Side?

With the advent of the Ipod coming into my life, I have become more personally aware of the clash between Microsoft and Apple.

Pretty much everything in my life, prior to my owning an Ipod, has had to do with a Microsoft product. All the computers I have used in my adult life (none of which I have purchased or maintained) have had Microsoft's operating system and Office Package installed. They have also used Microsoft's browser, Internet Explorer. I never payed much attention to Apple's product line since it was never a player in my life.

Therefore, I never took part in any (heated) discussion dealing with the pros and cons of each company's products. That is until recently. As a relatively new and pleased Ipod owner, I've been drawn into several interesting conversations.

The most common thread that runs throughout these conversations is:

Which company's products do you prefer better?

Why do I have to choose one entire company's productline over another? Can't I pick and choose? Why are certain people so proud of the fact that they are company loyalists?

Just because I love my Ipod and can definitely see myself with an Iphone and an Ipad in the future, am I now obligated to ditch my home pc and go out and buy a Mac?

Spring, March Madness - And a Nun...

It's March again so that must mean that March Madness is in full swing. I'm not the biggest fan of basketball as a spectator sport, since I much prefer to play it than to watch it, but I love to read the human interest stories that lie behind sports.

What could be more interesting than a story about a nun coaching a men's basketball team? As I ran across the headline, At Xavier, Nun Works Out Players’ Academic Side, I pictured a wee, little nun in a black and white habit chasing after 6 ft tall basketball players while brandishing a ruler. It gave me a chuckle. It turns out that I was not too far off the mark. Here's the opening paragraph of the article:

"By some measures, the success of the Xavier men’s basketball team rests not with a sharpshooting guard or a ball-hawking forward. Rather, it rests largely with a 5-foot-4, white-haired 77-year-old nun not afraid to rap on dormitory doors or to call players before dawn to ask about missed classes or late assignments."

I don't know about you all, but with Spring in the air, my head is in the clouds and my mind feels free to wander. I end up surfing the web instead of working on my homework.

How are all my online friends doing? Anyone else have a good March Madness story to share?

Icloud - Beautiful Cloud Computer

I found another iclouder who shares my views on the beauty of icloud.

Icloud - Beautiful Cloud Computer is the title of his blogpost. The blogger, Matt, writes:

"I found a new website for Cloud Computing. A virtual machine computer in the web browser and I find them to be amazing. iCloud has now become the most beautifully working, and most sharp and “sexy” looking Cloud computing website I have found.

iCloud gives you a initiative 3 GB of storage space for free, and that is quite a bit. You can put alot of songs on the drive, alot of photos and all. Download documents at school and upload them to the iCloud and then download them when you get home. Much more efficient then a USB flash drive as it gives you a fun visual experience."

It's nice to read about other people's experiences on icloud. I'd love to read yours!

Finally, cloud computing from a student's perspective

I've been doing a lot of research lately on cloud computing but can't say I have come across too many articles written from a student's perspective. Cloud Computing Education Taken to the Next Level addresses why a student benefits from cloud computing.

A student these days is dependent upon a computer. Whether it is their own laptop or the university's computer lab, every student needs access to a computer and can't always afford to keep up with all the costs and hassles associated with owning and maintaining a computer.

"What Benefits Does Cloud Computing Have on Education?

It is no wonder why students find themselves in a bind. Not only do they have to worry about student loans and purchasing books, but they also have to spend hundreds of dollars on computer software in order to complete their assignments and prevent their computer from failing on them. With this in mind, cloud computing education allows computer users to use desired applications without the necessity of purchasing the software, the frustration of installing it or the hassle of taking up computer memory with support software. Through different cloud platforms like Software as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service and Platform as a Service, cloud computing is made possible.

Considering the money saved through these cloud applications, most speculate that the largest benefit that cloud computing has on education is its economic factor. Instead of purchasing software and infrastructures, renting prices are determined by how often and how many services are being used. All software and data are stored in a remote host which enables computers to free up space while also being accessible at any time for users. Considering the amount of resources that cloud computing offers, users can find just about any type of infrastructure, service or software that they need. This helps to cut costs for educational institutions or any type of organization or business that uses cloud computing since these organizations will no longer have to purchase expensive software for an individual or a limited small number of employees and students."

This article does a good job explaining why I use icloud. I let icloud take over all the hassles and I just get the benefits of a free online computer. Very economical for me. I'll probably need to upgrade to their premium account with 100GB eventually but I already know it will be worth every penny!

Success! Icloud video now up and running!

Woo Hoo! Thanks to a little help from a friend, my video is now successfully up and running on youtube. How happy do you think I am?

Yup, I'm on cloud 9!

Since that was my first published video, I'm open to constructive criticism to help me before I dive into making my next video.

Any other amateur videographers out there?

Help! Not able to upload my icloud video to youtube

Well, I said I was going to do it and I did. I put together my first ever video that I planned to publish on Youtube and it doesn't upload. AUGH!!!

As you all know, I am NOT a techie so I have no clue why it will not upload. I'm going to have to look into this further. The video quality is not the best but I like that it explains a bit about why I enjoy using icloud so much.

Please drop me a line if you have any ideas about uploading videos to youtube!

US to Reveal Rules on Internet Security

According to the following article, US to Reveal Rules on Internet Security, on Tuesday the Obama administration planned to declassify portions of the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative, created during the Bush administration as a secret effort to harness the nation’s defensive and offensive strategies for protecting commercial and government networks.

I am a bit behind on my news, so it should be interesting to see just how much information IS declassified. I'll be happy to read about how the government "has a clear and workable strategy for protecting the nation’s computer systems". I hope I'll walk away feeling comforted and not scared by what I read seeing as how I wasn't sure how to take the following statement from Howard A. Schmidt, the industry cybersecurity veteran who was appointed in December as the White House Internet security adviser.

“I don’t think there will be any surprises,” he said. “Much of what has been going on has been what people would expect us to be doing.”

Has anyone had a chance to read the declassified information yet?

Having fun sharing photos from icloud

I've learned several ways to share photos from my albums on icloud.

I love this! As you all know, I am definitely looking forward to Spring and therefore have been keeping my eyes peeled for what I consider the first sign of Spring - Snowdrops (the flower). Anywho, I got a kick out of sharing a picture I took several years ago of snowdrops with some friends on icloud. It was so simple. At the bottom of every picture there are two icons to click. One says "Tweet this picture" (which I will discuss next) and the other says "Share photo". Easy peasy! I clicked on "Share photo" and then chose which friends of mine I wanted to share the photo with. While I was at it, I shared the photo on my personal profile for all of you iclouders that take a peek at my profile from time to time. Finally, I was given the opportunity to create a link to post the picture elsewhere like here on my blog for non-iclouders.

http://os.icloud.com/v1/links/12885161939/5536

Since that was so easy, I went ahead and tweeted a link to my picture on my twitter account. Take a look at my favorites tweets to the right.

Can you just imagine putting YOUR favorite pictures out there on the net with a few simple clicks?

blog.crappy.org

I've been thinking alot about what I'd like my upcoming icloud video to say, therefore, instead of recreating the wheel, I thought I'd look around and see what others have to say about icloud. At blog.crappy.org, (yes, that is the actual name of the blog!)they did an amazing job of explaining who, (people like you and me), and why one would use icloud. (Other than the fact that I've already told you it's great.)

"This type of free online computer is good for people who spend lots of time on the internet, browsing and chatting and want to avoid the pain of having viruses, spyware, malware. Since the operating system is contained in your browser and maintained by icloud you don’t need to worry as much about viruses or keeping your system up to date. You can also use it on any computer which makes it very handy if you need access to a familiar workspace from someone else’s computer."

In a more technical way it also states...

"Since the OS(operationg system) and its applications executes in the browser it also works offline. The Internet OS(operating system) boots itself (takes around 3 seconds) and runs in the primary memory of the computer. As soon as the browser is shut down, the OS disappears from the computer. Using XIOS/3 you never have to think about installing patches, updates or new versions of software again. The OS updates itself. You may also access your applications and documents from any Internet connected computer."

This gives me a little food for thought.

Any iclouders out there that want to fill me in on their favorite experiences on icloud?

Dear FB, Twitter - We want narrowcasting, not just broadcasting!

Ok, I copied the title from another person's blog, Bladam. This guy makes a good point.

How many of you all have wanted to limit who reads what on your Twitter, blog, Facebook etc...account? No, not you guys! I write my blog as a public stream of conciousness that I allow you all to choose to read or not as you will.

Ok, as Adam pointed out, it's not to exclude people but to write about something that is only interesting to a subset of your readers/friends/family. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to set up groups? One for family, one for close friends, one for classmates/workmates, etc...

It's nice to see that there are others who feel the same way.

What do you think about this?

A video about Icloud may be a better choice

It was painfull how bad my first attempt at a video was. (NO! I'm not showing it to you all.) I thought I'd talk a little about cloud computing but I have to admit that even I was bored to tears with the final cut.

Time to regroup and give it another try.

I figure if I do a video about a subject that is a lot more fun for everyone in general, you and I will be interesting in looking at it. So keep your fingers crossed for me. I'm going to be working on video number 2! (icloud- fun in the cloud)over the next week or so.

YouTube Video - Coming Right Up

It's now time for me to take the next step and learn more about this online world.

My next challenge to myself is to create a YouTube video. I've never made a video in my entire life so this is Definitely a Challenge. There's so many different choices when making a video. I'm not even sure where to start. Ok, granted, there needs to be a topic to the video. That's easy. I would love to do a video on cloud computing and try to explain on my level, a lay mans, what it means to me. It's just fascinating how complex the topic is and therefore why so many people don't grasp the basic concept.

So, I have my topic. I know what I want to say. I just have no idea have to convey that visually in a video. Wish me luck!

P.S. Please, please, please if you have any tips for a budding videographer, now's the time to send them my way.

P.P.S. Won't it be cool to have a video on YouTube and if it's halfway decent, I'll be sharing it with all my friends on icloud.

Grooveshark on icloud

I posted earlier about a cool widget I found but never really told you all anything about it.

By exploring my free icloud account I found Grooveshark, a free music streaming service. By signing up for a free account I was able to design my very own music widget. I've since come to appreciate Grooveshark for many other reasons. I've been reading up on Spotify lately and am happy I found Grooveshark first since Spotify would insert audio ads in my music and Grooveshark doesn't. It also seems that the range of music offered by Spotify is limited depending on which country you live in. I never had to consider that with Grooveshark since I access it through my icloud account with is available to me on any computer in the world. I like that I can be at the university computer lab, visiting friends and relatives or out travelling and still access my playlists of music. (There appears to be an endless amount of music available with Grooveshark!)

Any other Grooveshark fans out there?

Top Ten Misconceptions about Cloud Computing

Since it is so hard for me to verbalize my fascination with cloud computing and therefore clear up others misconceptions of cloud computing, I thought I'd publish a few key points from the article, Virtual Global Highlights Top Ten Misconceptions about cloud computing.

2. The cloud is not secure. Truth-be-told, in-house systems are often less secure, because they use unproven home-grown security models. Cloud applications developed with cloud platforms use a common security model, which lends additional security from the ground up; and cloud providers will often pay more attention to issues such as physical security and access controls.

6. It’s only for low-end consumer applications. Cloud computing has gained popularity in many consumer areas, but has also gained widespread acceptance in business applications, including productivity suites, online backup and storage, and collaborative environments; with applications of enterprise-class software already being delivered over the cloud.

Ok, that's enough blogging for today. I have real things to do like, studying and homework!

Are you a Gamer?

I'm not but my husband is. Thankfully he did not already own a gaming console before I met him and he has been quite understanding about my dislike of them. I don't mind him gaming but I think the consoles are a waste of money and you get locked into one console which can then sell you games at any price. He has therefore stuck to computer games he can purchase and play on the computer.

He'll be happy to hear that Cloud Computing is Poised to Transform Gaming.

My head is in the clouds today

My head is in the clouds today and guess what I found while floating around? There is actually a Cloud Computing World Series Awards! I laughed when I first saw it. Sounds a bit like baseball to me. Must be hard to hit clouds instead of baseballs. After I stopped laughing, I realized that this could be a really good thing. Think about it, someone(several people) will sit down and rate/judge all the different cloud computing companies out there. I don't have time to try them all out but I'm really enjoying my free account at icloud and hope to see it do well.

Do you have any concerns about being out in Cyberspace?

What to do? You want to be out in Cyberspace but worry about how much info to divulge. I think it's really hard to decide what to share with the online world and what would be better off not being shared.

I've decided not to publish personal details. What else should one do to protect oneself?

Give this article a look. It reviews the basics on how to protect you and yours while out there in the "social" realm. (Like me, blogging, twitter, etc..)

Any additional points you would add?

Follow up on a previous post - Loss of Photos

I was ranting 2 posts ago about how I have a tendency to lose things electronically and the latest being that all my pictures on my ipod have mysteriously disappeared. With the number of times I've rebooted and redownloaded itunes, I completely understand why they are missing but it's still irritating.

I've been playing around with my icloud account and finally feel free to upload all my photos for the final time. At least when my photos are stored on the net, I'll never have to worry about losing them again and I can access and use them no matter which computer I'm on. I was out on the web and found on an Indian website this writeup.

indianicloud

it provides a link directly to the article of interest for me:

Supercharge-your-iphone-to-100gb-with-icloud

The article talks about how iphone users will be able to use their icloud accounts over their iphones. Does this mean I'll have access to that as well on my ipod? That would be great to even have access to my photos via my ipod.

Yeah, never again will I have to reupload my photos!

There is indeed a limit to how long each post can be!

Wow! I learned yet another new thing about blogging today - Keep it short or your post gets cut off. See, that would have been a good piece of free advice I would have appreciated hearing from you my blog readers(whoever you are) earlier.

Take this opportunity to chime in now with your best free advice you can think of for a new blogger!

Tired now, I'll finish the rest of the prior post tomorrow. Think of it as a cliff hanger:)

Feeling better

Since I'm feeling better, I thought I 'd update you on my latest find on the web about three products which are slowly growing on me.
1)My ipod
2)Cloud wifi finder
3)icloud

Believe it or not but I'm posting to this blog right now from my ipod. I'm loving the freedom of posting from my bed. Nice to get a few things off my mind before I call it a day.

So not only can I make my posts from my home wifi, I can post when I'm at university or at my local coffeehouse. The cloud wifi finder app is going to make it easier for me to locate the nearest wifi no matter where I am. Since this is not an iphone, I am a bit limited by finding wifi access before I can surf the web(or should I say cloud)

I don't know why but it always seems that I end up losing things electronically. Case in point- I went to look at all the adorable photos of my child saved onto my ipod. Guess what? They're all gone! Hundreds upon hundreds of photos I painstakingly upload from my home computer are gone!

Still sick....

I'm home sick again today. Can't quite seem to shake the fever. I promised myself this morning that I would be good today and stay off the computer - just rest. Not easy to do once the blogging bug bites ya!

So maybe I need to step it up today with pampering. I'm defrosting some homemade carrot and lentil soup from the freezer for lunch since I found I wasn't up to doing any cooking yesterday. I ate cereal and bananas yesterday because they were on hand and required NO cooking.

I would prefer chicken noodle soup but I need a good recipe. Any tried and true recipes for a good chicken noodle soup out there that you'd like to pass my way?

Hello....Anybody out there?

I'm new to blogging so I'm just wondering at what point I stop talking to myself.

Hint, hint...Please post a comment!

Speaking of music

Speaking of music, what websites would you recommend for listening to free music? Is that possible(legally) or is everything for a fee these days?

Just wondering. A bit of stream-of-consciousness from me in my blogging today. :)

I'm Freezing!

Not so much fun to be home sick. No matter how many layers of clothing and blankets I have on, I can't seem to warm up. My hands are soooo cold, I'm wearing gloves while typing this. Thanks for listening to my moaning.

PS Having fun uploading all my music to my icloud account. Right now I'm in a James Taylor frame of mind. Nice and easygoing for a day at home.

What are you listening to?

Home Sick - Time to try out icloud

Hi Everyone!

I'm home sick with a fever today. Not feeling my best but what better time to blog and play around on the computer. Now, I have plenty of time to look into yesterday's topic - cloud computing. I've opened an account(by the way, free)with icloud but haven't had much time to dig in and play with it before today. So, what better thing than to lounge around on the couch with the laptop today and see how the cloud is going to be of help to me.

Anyone else tried this out yet?

A formal definition of Cloud Computing

All I can say is that if you follow this link and read the article that gives their definition of cloud computing, you'll understand why it's a bit hard to wrap your mind around the entire concept and why my definition was a bit vague.

Hubby's Suggestion - Cloud Computing

I guess my husband has heard me bitch enough about the topic of my previous post because this weekend he said I should look into cloud computing.

I don't know about you but I've never heard that term before and didn't know what the heck he was talking about. Even after he explained, I'm still not sure I understand exactly what it is. I've googled the term and read a bit about it and the best way for me to describe it is to say: It is the answer to my problems!

Basically, cloud means internet and cloud computing means I can do everything I would normally do on my home computer on a "web computer". The benefit being that I have everything saved on the web and therefore access to all my files from ANY computer.

I've opened accounts with 2 different companies on the web and plan to give them a go. I'll let you know how it goes.

Anyone already given this a go themselves?

Insight-The more things change, the more they remain the same

Ok, now that I'm a student again, I find that things have changed. When I use the computer labs at the local university, I no longer take a floppy disk with me but a memory stick.

YET, I still seem to have the same problem. I never seem to have the latest version of my files on the memory stick. It's really hard to remember to save my latest changes not only on my hard drive but also on my memory stick. (Of course I save my files constantly while in the middle of working on them. If you've ever lost information due to hopping around in many programs and windows simultaneously, you'll understand my point)

I've tried to solve this problem by emailing my files to myself so that when I'm at the computer lab or at home, my files are available to me. Well, I realize this is completely crazy thinking but when desperate, I try to improvise.

I always feel like I'm in the wrong place at the wrong time. Whenever I'm in the computer lab, I'm wishing I was home and vice versa since I never seem to have what I need when I want it.

What about you?

Looky what I found!

This widget is free and allows me to listen to my favorites. The 80's!

ILounge - Forbes #1 pick for a music blog

I figured since Forbes made good reccomendations about online technology, I'd check to see what their reccomendation for a music blog would be.

It's ILounge.com! See, I own one of their products and didn't even know about this blog before.

Now that I'm back in school, it just makes sense to learn as much as I can while I have the time. Now I plan to spread my wings again and dive in head first in my thirst for broadening my horizons in the virtual, online world.

As always, please feel free to put your two cents in and let me know who you like to follow online.

Blog help

Obviously I'm new to blogging so I thought I might find some helpful info out there in the virtual world.  I found a really good article about building a blog.

How Blogs Work

Maybe it can be of use to other new, start up bloggers. :)

I've gone Twitter!

I thought it might be cool to have a link to my new Twitter account on this blog but as you can see, I haven't quite figured Twitter out yet.

I thought following the category, "geek" might be a good start toward gathering more info on the latest and greatest goings on in the online world.

Can anyone tell me how to fix my Twitter feed? I'm also open for categories to follow on Twitter.

Thanks!

Ipod Touch

I bought an Ipod last summer.  The initial reason was to help me get in shape and get over the excuse of "it's too boring" to go for a walk all by my lonesome on a regular basis.  I bought one ebook and some music but didn't use it very often until my husband starting borrowing it.

I've now discovered the lovely world of YouTube.  What a great way to be entertained on-the-go!  My son loves it too.  Always wants to see the babies laughing hysterically.

Anyway, that was my first introduction to apps(application). I want to get the most out of my Ipod.

I just found this cool link:

Do you have any recommendations on a fun app?

Hello Brave New World

Hello everyone out there on the web!

My name is Rose and I am challenging myself to brave the new world of the internet.  Ok, not soooo new, but with it being a quickly changing environment, I don't feel I've quite kept up with the changes.

I'm taking some basic computer courses at the local university.

This blog is just the start.

Join me on my journey!
